macro photography

I used macro mode and manual focus to take this image. I think this is effective because as well letting us see the otherwise quite invisible spider's web in more detail, it also has made the rest of the image so out of focus that the background has become very blurred and the bits of light coming through the leaves appear as circles. I think this makes the picture more appealing as they make it look more attractive and add a different element to it rather than it simply being an image of a spiders web.

Although the subject of this image is the leaf overall, the focusing and placement of the leaf means that the front is primarally the main point of the photograph. This is effective as most of the interesting things are going on here, and our attention is drawn to the holes in the front of the leaf and the frayed edges. This makes the image much more interesting to look at than just a plain leaf took stright on would be.

This image is positioned and focused so that the area inside this tube is the main subject area of the image and that the rest is blurred out. This is effective as although we can't really see inside of this space as it's quite dark, our eyes are still drawn there first and i think this makes the viewer want to find out more about what is in the tube where the camera doesn't show us.

I like this image because at this angle we can see a lot of the subject. It is taken from a level of where the rose's head would have stood probably a week or so earlier, and this way we can tell that the rose it dying and drooping downwards. The use of macro mode and manual focus meant that all the attention was on the rose head and you can see details such as the petals starting to loose colour and fray around the edges. I think the colour of the rose is a great contrast against the other dull colours in the background and makes sure your attention is immediately drawn to it.

I used macro mode and manual focus to take this image. This helped to just get the spider and it's web in focus, and blurred out all the background. I think this is effective because it means the spider is more noticeable and becomes the main subject of the image. It also helps us to notice the smaller details of both the web and spider, and therefore becomes more effective.

rather than just being took straight on, this image was taken from the side, which means we get to see the shadows made by the light the must be coming from above the subject of the photograph.

I think this image gives a nice contrast between man made things and nature, and also shows the relationship between them as we can see the the leaves have simply grew around the fence, rather than let it get in it's way. There isn't really and extreme close up in this image, but macro mode was still used alongside manual focus to capture it. this means that anything beyond the fence is out of focus and blurred, meaning we only pay attention to the fence, the lock and leaves.

This image appears to have been took from an insect's eyelevel or POV. I think this is quite effective asit puts the viewer on the same level as the dead wasp that is the subject of this image. It makes it much more notciable and gives us a better view of it than just an ariel shot would have.

I like this image of the snail trail because it appears as though it's from a snail or another small insects POV. The use of macro mode and manual focus means that even though it's very faint, the trail is the main subject of this image and

This image is a high angle areial shot of some holly. The focus on this means that we can only really see the top peice of holly as the rest is out of focus and blurred.

I like the angle this image has been taken from because the fact that it's taken from beneath the subject really shows how they vines are climbing up the wall and exaggerates this. However, although this image is effective in the that way, it doesn't really show an extreme close up of anything as macro photography should.

This is a very close up shot of a feather with rain droplets on it, which was took using macro mode and manual focus. This image is unusual because normally an image of a feather would be taken from the opposite end. Also, we can see that this feather is bent in the middle, which means that as a result only part of the feather is actually in focus. This part just so happens to be the lighter, middle section of the feather, which gives it contrast and depth. the use of Marco mode and only focus being on the feather means that we can see the water droplets very clearly and therefore gives the image another element and makes it more interesting.

This shot was taken from a high angle and looks straight down onto the subject. The use of macro mode and focus again means that we only really see the leaves in this image as the rest is not in focus and therefore blurred out. This creates the rule of thirds as there is not just one leaf dead on centre, but several who basically cover the whole frame.

Fashion Photography.

Helmut Newton

The model in this image is off-centre, which creates the rule of thirds. Her body is also jaunting out at a lot of different angles which makes this an interesting image to look at. Her leg being up creates a shape that is normally seen, it also makes it appear as if there is almost only one leg, and therefore less space is covered in the bottom half of the image, meaning our attention is drawn to the top where the most is going on. Having her right arm out, along with the bag hanging off, means that the majority of the frame is covered here, and makes the model command more attention. When you look at this image from the top half, it appears as though the model is dressed up to go somewhere nice, however the bottom half shows that she only has underwear on, although she is still wearing heels. Both halves of this image contrast, as one depicts glamour and the other sex appeal.

The model's hair and makeup, along with the fur coat, all imply glamour and class. However, her suggestive pose implies something very different. The coat barely covers her modesty but in doing so still maintains that little bit of class. The fact that she has both her legs and arms spread out, means she takes up more of the frame, and therefore appears more bold and eye catching.

Although this image has not been took in a studio, and is not posed in a way that she is stood up looking at the camera, we can still tell that this is not natural. Her body has clearly been oiled to catch the light and almost make it look like she's sweating. And even though she is only wearing a bikini, she still has high heels on. Also the positioning of her legs is unnatural, as that would probably not be comfortable. Possibly natural light is coming from above this image, which creates a shadow of her legs onto the mat she is laying on. On a closer look, it appears as though her hands are tied together, as if she is under captive. This relates to the dog, who is possibly there as 'guard dog' to watch over her.

Terence Donovan

The image is of the model's profile, which is changed completely by the style of her hair. The shape of the hair from this angle at both sides correlate each other perfectly and both sides fall into the same shape. as her hair is quite dark, her face stands out against it more than it would have with the white background. She is looking downwards and we cant really see any defining features of her face. This image is more about the shape of the model rather than the expression/message/setting/props. She is not dead on centre which creates the rule of thirds as the subject of the image is spread out. The lighting is also very carefully thought out, as a shadow is created on her face and more so upper neck. But, her lower neck is in so much light that it almost completely fades into the white background.

The British flag in the background of this photo represents how strong British culture was at the time this photo was taken. The model is lent on her right leg which means she doesn't cover image of the flag, but also means she takes up more space on the frame overall and therefore becomes the main focus, rather than the flag. Her pose- along with her facial expression- also makes her look bored and as if she doesn't want to be there. This particular model (Twiggy) was only a teenager herself at this time and this pose represents the teenagers in society, as they were starting to rebel more. Her outfit also signifies change, as she is wearing quite manly clothes which was never really seen until then. She is also wearing shorts and therefore showing quite a bit of flesh. I think that Donovan's intent when shooting this image was to relate to the teenagers of the time and therefore appeal to a certain demographic.

Although the model in this image is more or less positioned in the centre, she is not standing straight and has her back curved, and her foot pushed out on an angle. she is also turned halfway to the left, so we see a profile of her face which is turned further away, and see almost a frontal shot of her body. Her hand is positioned on her waist, resulting in her arm being jaunted out at a sharp angle and reinforcing the strong pose she pulling. Her hair being up also lets us see her elongated neck, and gives it a feel of elegance and regalness, as does her gown and closed eyes.

This is quite a provocative image. The model appears to be wearing nothing but underwear and stockings, which are very revealing. However, although this image features a lot if sexualisation, it also has some aspects of childhood in there too. She is covering herself with a teddy bear which is obviously a childish object. The bear theme also continues to the hat she has on, which is almost a sort of clear rain hat with bear ears on. This juxtaposition of the sexual features along with the childish ones gives it a 'lolita' feel.

The very dark background in contrast with all the light features of the woman (her hair/skin/dress.) mean that she really stands out in this image. Your eyes are immediately drawn to her, rather than the man carrying her, who is in a black suit, has darker features and therefore doesn't stand out against the backdrop as well. This is also because he is stood straight on, right in the middle of the frame, whereas the woman is on his shoulders, and is lent over in a diagonal shape. This is more pleasing to the eye and grabs more attention. Also, the only apparent light in this image are the street lamps above. She is closer to these and therefore more visible.

Most of the light in this image is on the model's face. It comes from the top right hand corner of the image, which results in the bottom and mainly left side to be in darkness. It also creates a shadow of the model's head as it is tilted slightly. This use of light ensures that most of the focus is on the model's face and upper body, and also helps to accentuate her features such as her cheek bones. She is dressed in rather manly clothes and her hair has been made to look short. She also has minimal makeup on which makes this image a large contrast to the usual 'woman looking glamorous' fashion shoots we see. Her pose is also quite manly, as she appears slouched- probably with her legs open- and has her arm resting on her knee.

Photo Journalism

Robert Doisneau

I like this image because it captures a moment. You can clearly see what the main focus of this image is as it has been look so they are right in the centre. Our eyes are also drawn to the couple kiss because their bodies are positioned differently than all the other people in the image. Everyone else is walking as if they are going to the right of this scene, whereas the man is turned to face the camera and is holding onto the woman, so even though we cant see much of her, we know she is connected to, and just as important as the man. I also like the fact that nobody else seems to be paying any attention to this couple, they're just going about their own business. This implies that the couple are almost in their own little world.

I think this image really portrays what childhood is. Looking at the picture, we can clearly see that this has been taken in front of the Eiffel Tower, which is a very famous landmark. The fact that the children do not seem to be paying attention to this at all, shows that they only care about playing and having fun. The older girl at the back on the roller blades is holding onto and being pulled along by the younger girl on the bike. She is putting all her trust in her, and this type of trust shows that they obviously have a strong bond with each other and are possibly sisters.

I like the fluffiness of this image. You can tell that these people really are mid-dance and that this is not posed. The way the woman's skirt is billowing out helps show this and also creates a nice diagonal shape which draws the viewers eyes to her more. I think the fact that the man dancing is the only coloured person in the picture is also a point to pick up on as it could possibly reflect the time and society this photograph was taken in.

Although this image is clearly posed, it still shows a real situation. This mother and her child are posed classically with the child sitting on the mothers knee. However, neither look remotely happy as people in this pose normally would. They both look quite distressed and upset. Also, the fact that the mother's hair is in her face and she hasn't bothered to move it when she's getting her picture taken shows that possibly something big has happened that's make her not care about little things like that. Their clothes also look quite worn and basic, which suggests poverty. The tree's that are silhouetted in the immediate background look dead and leafless, which- along with the clearly destroyed landscape in the rest of the image- tell us that there has probably been a fire or another disaster of some sort.

This image shows a very famous world leader at the time, and was probably taken after a conference of some sort. It shows Churchill doing his iconic 'V' (victory) gesture, and also portrays a different side to his personality as politicians are usually quite serious, and he is smiling. The background of this image is very plain which makes him stand out more, as do the contrast of his white cravat against his black jacket.

This is a very famous image taken in times square. You can see from the man's almost clenched fists that he is possibly feeling a lot of emotion during this kiss, possibly relief and happiness from winning the war, and this kiss is how he's chosen to express it. The woman being lent backwards creates a really nice shape and looks more pleasing to the eye than them kissing just standing straight would have. The people's expressions in the background are also a nice element. You can see that they're all smiling and look quite amused by the kiss, this implies that it wasn't a serious, emotional, private kiss between an actual couple.

I think this image is attention-grabbing because you can clearly see that this is still a child, and yet he's smoking. His facial expression and body language show that he looks quite down (fed up) and probably doesn't really care about anything. This makes the viewer wonder why he looks like this, and possibly if that is also the reason he is smoking at such a young age. He also looks as if he's 'wise beyond his years' and has experienced a lot through life.

This is a very famous image from this photographer. It shows a mother and her children who are clearly in a state of poverty. The children are turned away from the camera and hiding their faces, whereas a lot of the time children like to show off in front of a camera. This makes the viewer wonder why these children are possibly so reserved and shy- what has happened to them? The mother looks very concerned in this picture. Her head is resting in her hand which makes her look resigned but also thoughtful and concerned. This makes the audience question what she is so concerned about, they think about what might be effecting this woman's life.

The woman in this image is profile and almost silhouetted against the sky. Because this is taken from a low angle, she appears larger and looks like she is towering above the fields in the background. This makes the image have a bigger impact. She also looks very distressed, like she's about to cry. She is clutching her head and neck, as if she is in pain or uncomfortable. We wonder what has happened to make her look so distressed- has something traumatic such as death occurred?

introduction to photography

Journalism photography

I found this image using Google images; it was on a website called ‘Seattle pi'. This could be used in a newspaper, or on the live news as it clearly shows something important going on.   It captures a very important time in history, and the fact that this has been positioned so the protestor's signs are in clear view for the reader, lets you see exactly what’s going on. Also, one of the only white people in this image is a police officer, this could show that it was the white people with all the power in this situation.

Photography in advertising

I found this image on Google images. This could be used as an advertisement on billboards/bus stops, or possibly in a magazine.  I like the fact that this image portrays the name of the perfume it’s trying to sell; ‘heat’, as beyonce's almost frizzy hair, dewy skin and the use of red throughout suggest heat. the use of the red is also quite bold and captures attention.

Wildlife photography

I found this image on ‘thefirstprint.co.uk’ via Google images.   This could be used as an image to accompany and article in a newspaper etc. about the subject, or it could in a calendar or book aimed at people who enjoy wildlife.   I like the perspective of this image, the way the camera is angled at the animal makes it look almost dangerous and giant, when in reality it’s only a small, slow, and harmless creature.

Sport photography

I found this image on ‘buinessweek.com’ via Google images. This could be used in newspapers/magazines, and also on the news and other tv shows that talk about sports.  I like the fact that this image was so well timed and thought out that it captured the exact moment this swimmer entered the water. I think this creates a really good reaction of suspense, because it'll make the reader want to find out what happened once she entered the water, and therefore, read the article etc.

Fashion photography

I found this image on vogue.com. This could be used in a magazine or as an advertisement on a billboard etc.I like the contrast of red and yellow on this image, as i think it makes the colours pop more and therefore the garments stand out. They also give off a strong impression of summer, which means this image will appeal the people who like the summer and heat. The way the model covers the whole frame from left to right means you can help but look at her and is very effective.

I found this image using google images. This could be used in a newpaper or magazine article to do with central park. i like this image because of the birdseye view it gives, it lets the reader look down onto such a big city like new york and makes it look almost like a toy town. I think this is really different
prespective that grabs attention because at first you would belive that there would be this amount of vast, green space in the middle of a city landscape.
